Glacéau Vitaminwater presents the DAVID TLALE A/W 2010 collection, which traces the most significant architecture from our futuristic decade, capturing a lavishly illustrated collection radically revisiting our understanding of form and structure in fashion, industrial design, and architecture.

This collection traces fashion’s trajectory from its structural origins to its present-day connotations of affluence and elegance. In doing so, architecture and structure are established as new critical elements for design that embraces richly decorative patterns, complex layering, sumptuous materials, and sculptural forms.

David Tlale explains, “The relationship between fashion and architecture is not a particularly oblique one. Both are based on structure, shape and pretty basic necessities – clothes and shelter; therefore, exploring the existing correlation between the two basics and translating them into contemporary fashion was only a natural progression for us.”

Leather, polyester, silk chiffon, silk satin, duchess satin and PVC form the foundation for the collection creating the texture through a mixture of soft and rigid fabrics. The use of these fabrics and structure set the tone for a swashbuckling feminine form and power; offering supreme style for a glamorous life that only a David Tlale creation can portray.

Use of leather and PVC harden the design elements of the collection, adding a constructed feel to the garments. Built into the design elements of the collection is the intricate and involved use of zip finishes to build the structure of a garment.

Drawing inspiration from the iconoclastic structural designs of the contemporary buildings in Dubai, such as the pinnacle white building with sharp angles and composed lines, this collection is adorned with a metallic palate of bronze, gold, copper, onyx, browns and a fringe of red, bringing attention to the detailed constructional elements found in this A/W collection.

Hot on the heels of dressing Charlize Theron for the 2010 FIFA World Cup draw Errol Arendz makes his long awaited return to the runway alongside Craig Port at the AUDI finale show at the Autumn Winter Audi Joburg Fashion Week in Joburg in January 2010. Welcoming back Errol Arendz to the local runway after years of absence from local Fashion Weeks, the show is bound to be a visual sensation. Arendz has by no means taken time off, constantly producing collections worn by celebrities and the who’s who all around the world. Furthermore, the launch of a footwear collection has kept this pioneer of South African fashion well busy. Arendz will be showing 40 ready-to-wear garments, ending off with 10 couture pieces, celebrating his superb craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Sharing the bill with Arendz is fashion darling Craig Port , showing his A/W ’10 Menswear collection simply titled “Fangbangers”. Referencing the media’s recent obsession with vampires and dark forces, this collection will showcase Port’s darker side, translating into darker richer colours, studs and the occasional fake fur. Port integrates AUDI’s forward thinking principles throughout his production, choosing up to date fabrics, that are technologically manufactured, based on performance and, most importantly, quality and beauty. AUDI’s brand principles of pushing the limits and being at the forefront of design excellence through constant innovation lends the perfect stage for the Finale show hosted exclusively by AUDI at the AUDI Joburg Fashion Week A/W ’10 in January. The show will conclude three days of this country’s top and emerging design talent in a grand finale featuring two of South Africa ’s most established and influential design talents Mary Reynolds of Tramps will be producing the show, and has a long-standing friendship with both designers, making the AUDI Finale Show a collaboration of experience, skill and talent. Reynolds assures the show will have added elements for spectacle and will definitely push the limits, always in line with AUDI’s “Vorsprung durch Technik”. Southern Sun extend its intimate connection with rest, relaxation during Audi Joburg Fashion Week The hotel group’s lingerie show on Thursday 21 January at the Sandton convention Centre will showcase the creations of one of South Africa ’s premier swimwear and lingerie designers, Dax Martin. Recognised for his gorgeous swimwear brand, Dax Martin is at the forefront of local design. With his unique seamless lines Martin produces lingerie pieces to enhance femininity and beautify the art of repose. We are nearing that time of the year when new resolutions are made. As you ponder over goals achieved and those yet to be achieved, let me share with you why I am glad… not because 2009 is over, but glad that it happened! January 2009 saw the 3rd installment of Audi Joburg Fashion Week (AJFW). Europe and North America were witnessing the economic crisis. I had just returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, where a very gloomy picture of the financial melt down was painted. Back home, we thought we were safe, but alas! As the saying goes “When America sneezes, the whole world catches a cold” AFI saw it crucial to hold a seminar right before AJFW where top industry analysts and industry experts shared their views on the impact of the global economic crisis on South Africa and in particular, on our fashion and clothing industry. Fashionistas became Recessionistas. Armed with their exceptional talent and skill and with knowledge and insights from the seminar, designers interpreted this in their autumn/winter collections and the message was clear; know your customers, give them what they want and at a value that will not leave them bankrupt! A lot of designers stuck with the quintessentially fashionable colour, black and minimalistic collections. Others however followed Karl Lagerfeld’s take on the issue of the economy “Recession, what recession?” Sadly, as the crisis intensified, many global fashion houses suffered huge losses. Many simply went under. Here at home, many factories also battled, many of them closing shop unable to cope with reduced exports, cheap imports, an influx of global brands, shrinking market shares etc. Consumers tightened belts, recycled their clothes and accessories, and lipsticks came in handy. Many designers however, seemed to survive by adhering to simple business strategies and not rushing to expand. Despite this period of uncertainty, AFI also prides itself with the successful launch of the very first Pan African Fashion show case in June 2009. Fifty one designers from 23 African countries and a few designers in the diaspora, showcased at the first Africa Fashion Week. This was the highlight of South African and African Fashion Weeks in general, debunking the myths and stereotype that have plagued the continent over many years. As well as watching the best of football at the Confederation Cup, audiences from all over the world were given an opportunity to see fashion and style from different parts of Africa, and interact with some of the best designers on the continent. Using different influences from their diverse backgrounds, designers showed that fashion from Africa is not “folk lore” or “curio”, but modern, different, unique and authentic. Many South African designers came away with awards at the first Africa Fashion Awards held at the end of the fashion week. One of them, David Tlale won a trip to New York to show case at Mercedes New York Fashion Week. A very proud moment for all of us indeed. We ended the year with Cape Town Fashion Week where a lot of new generation designers impressed and men’s wear, swimwear and men’s underwear featured strongly. Established designers, most of who showcased off site wowed audiences. Our designers also featured strongly at the recently held Ms World and Ms SA pageants. Contestants looked amazing in spectacular gowns by South African designers. Fashion Week is a business platform, so when all the air kissing and hugging is done, fashion designers meet buyers, new clients and the media. Business is conducted and deals are struck. Designers benefit and all their hard work turns into profitable enterprises. African Fashion International is proud to be part of the growth and developments of these fashion entrepreneurs. We continue to afford them the best networking and marketing platform where they can grow their brands and continue to fly our flag high. AFI is proud to be part of changing negative images about our continent and telling our own stories through the work of our designers. As we enter 2010 and brace ourselves to hosting the World Cup, let us give the world our very best image in terms of football, fashion and most importantly a memorable experience. We want tourists to come back to South Africa with their families and wallets! Join us in 2010 as we continue to take African Fashion to the world! We open the year with the much celebrated Audi Joburg Fashion Week which takes place from 20 – 23rd January and features the best of the country’s Autumn/Winter Collections. Fashion designers from RJ Kay Creations are up to their necks in frocks because they are dressing women from both pageants – 17 Miss World contenders, and several outfits each for Miss SA presenters Penny Lebyane and Jo-Ann Strauss.

Other local designers dressing Miss World contestants are socialite Uyanda Mbuli’s fashion house, Diamond Face Couture, Kluk CGDT, JJ Schoeman, Thula Sindi and Haroun Hansrot.

Audi South Africa has renewed its sponsorship of African Fashion International’s annual Autumn Winter Fashion Week.  The new deal makes the luxury vehicle manufacturer the longest running and now, most significant partner of fashion in South Africa .

Audi have been the headline sponsor of Joburg Fashion Week since its launch four years ago as the country’s first Autumn Winter Fashion Week in 2006.   The 2010 Audi Joburg Fashion Week takes place over four days from the 20 -23 January 2010 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Commented African Fashion International CEO Paul Jackson:  “It is encouraging that Audi have taken a considered view to support one of South Africa’s leading design industries – fashion for 4 years running.  This continuity affords our designers marketing opportunities which would otherwise be inaccessible and is a major step towards the journey of building a sustainable industry.  It is even more significant given that Audi made the commitment in these tricky market conditions”

The seeds for the continued partnership were planted at this year’s Winter collections when the international head office in Germany were in the country assessing the effectiveness of the partnership.

On October 8th, 2009, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, Chairperson of African Fashion International and the Motsepe Foundation, hosted the annual Design For Life at Johannesburg’s sumptuous Westcliff Hotel.

The fundraiser was MCed by Busi Mahlaba (presenter on SABC 2′s Motswako) and there to model the t-shirts were Edith Venter (patron of CANSA Gauteng and businesswoman), Terry Pheto (Actress) and Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe. The event was attended by many other distinguished guests, celebrities and media.
